His Excellency Malay Mishra, India’s High Commissioner to Dominica, paid a two-day official visit to Dominica from June 12-13, 2009. Whilst on the island, the High Commissioner met with Dominica’s Head of State, His Excellency President Dr. Nicholas Liverpool, several government officials as well as officials of the Dominica Association of Industry and Commerce (DAIC) and the Agricultural Business Institute.
As a result, industry officials from Dominica have been invited to participate in a trade and investment mission scheduled to take place in Trinidad and Tobago later this month.
High Commissioner Mishra explained more about his meeting with the aforementioned personnel and the upcoming trade and investment mission in Trinidad.
“Both the sessions were really useful. I was exposed to the situation in respect to trade and industry in the Commonwealth of Dominica. I have invited both the Chambers to visit Trinidad to interact with a very high level team of trade and investment coming from India to visit Trinidad between the 21st and 22nd of June, 2009 during the course of which, for the first time ever, an Indian/Caribbean conclave of trade and industry will be held in Port of Spain.
The delegation is being led by our apex body of industry, Confederation of Indian Industry, as well as we are having a delegation representing Indian manufacturing sector which is led by the Federation of Indian Exporters Organisation. Besides that, we shall have presentations by the Exim Bank of India, the exporting Bank of India as well as on tourism and travelling. We shall also have presentations by the directors of India Tourism Board and Air India.”

The High Commissioner also met with Dominica’s Energy Minister to explore the possibilities of India engaging with Dominica in developing various sources of renewable energy. He said that he has informed the Government of Dominica that a technical mission will be put together and sent to this region. He believes that Dominica and India should work together given the interest of this country to develop different sources of renewable energy.
The Indian High Commissioner also met with the General Manager of the AID Bank, Kinsley Thomas, to discuss important areas of financing for various development schemes in Dominica.
Dominica has had official relations with the Government of India since 1981. During that time, the both countries have shared common interest in many international meetings and have supported each other’s positions in the United Nations and other bodies. India is currently bidding for non-permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council for the term 2011-2012 and has sought Dominica’s support for India’s bid for membership. |
