Stiffer penalties will be passed in parliament soon for persons found with illegal firearms. Hon. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit made the announcement recently on Wednesday, 11th August as he addressed the official ground breaking ceremony of the new grand bay police station.

“Before the end of this year, God’s willing, we shall go to parliament to pass legislation dealing with illegal possession of firearms in Dominica. I will say that this piece of legislation will be draconian in its nature. If you are not a licensed firearm owner, you have no business having a firearm. You cannot use firearms to scare people and cause people to be afraid to go to the beach and going to the river and going about from home to home. We cannot have that in Dominica. I give you the assurance my friend, that we shall go to the parliament and do so. It means that if anyone of you, anyone of us is found with a firearm unlicensed, that you will go straight to the Stock Farm prison.”
