Dominicans celebrate Real Mass 2010 in vivid colours

Dominicans, over the past weekend from around the island took off their coats of modesty to participate in Carnival 2010 dubbed “Real Mas 2010”. The weekend’s activities started off with the Miss Dominica beauty pageant which was won by Marcia Baptiste from the town of Portsmouth. She also walked away with the awards for Miss Photogenic, best performing talent and best in evening wear. Dana Augustine from Paix Bouche placed first runner and up followed by Kristelle Fagan of Kingshill. Other awards went to Kristelle Fagan – Miss Amity and best response to question, Clarissa of the Carib Territory – best evening wear. The award for best costume and best in costume went to Ami Polydore of Riviere Cyrique and best in swimwear went to Dana Augustine. The other contestants in the show were Valdie De Jean from Morne Prosper and Shama St. Hillaire from Pichelin.

On Saturday night, the thirteenth of February, the reigning calypso king, Lord Karessa successfully defended his title walking away with the crown from among ten calypsonians with two pieces ‘Haiti’ and ‘Dogs on Track’. De Bob placed first, followed by Tasha P and Soul Puss. Both Tasha P and Soul Puss were signing for the first time in the finals. Tasha P, a former Junior Monarch winner was also participating in the adult competition for her first time.

Monday and Tuesday saw many Dominicans take to the street in the traditional street jump up. Like last year, Monday was set aside for T-shirt bands and Traditional Carnival. Tuesday saw the float and costume parades and gangs in the afternoon.

The road-march title was won by Sy with his song “Dr. Finger”. Other awards given out for the two days of street jump up are as follows:

Best Individual (Dominica On-line) – Andy Carter
Best Sensay – Dr. Damien Dublin
Best J’Ouvert Band (Tribute to Michael Jackson) – Religious Ones
Special Prize (Run Away Sailors) – Friendship Crew
Special Prize for Best J’Ouvert Team or crew or posse (Bin Bobol) – New Town Councillors
Longest Lapo Kabwitt on the Road – Yam Piece Lapo Kabwitt
