2.8 million dollar water supply commissioned in Delices

Opening of water tap at water commissioning in Delices

Residents turned in large numbers on Wednesday afternoon for the official commissioning of the Delices water supply. The 2.8 million dollar project was developed to rectify a water shortage problem which affected residents of Delices for several years.

Hon Parliamentary Representative for the La Plaine Constituency, Petter Saint Jean, says the commissioning on Wednesday is another example of the ability of the current administration to keep its promises to nationals.

The Dominica Social Security has embarked on a series of stakeholder consultations across the island. Employers, employees and self employed persons have been engaged in dialogue on matters relating to the further development of the social security scheme.

Janice Jean-Jacques Thomas is the Executive Director of the Dominica Social Security. She spoke with GIS News on Tuesday about the purpose of the meetings.

The Ministry of Health will this week host a National Summit on Chronic Non Communicable Diseases. The theme for the summit is “A Healthier Dominica 2011 and Beyond.”

The Health Ministry in its 10 year national strategic plan for health listed CNCD’S as a priority area and identified strategies for the prevention and management of the epidemic.

 

Independence activities for 2011 formerly launched

Activities to mark this year’s thirty-third anniversary of Independence was formerly launched at press conference at the Government Information Service studio and carried live on Channel seven on both MARPIN 2k4 and SAT Telecoms on Friday, September 2, 2011 and on DBS Radio. The activities, which will run from Sunday September 18th to Friday November 4th, 2011, will be held under the theme “Celebrating Thirty-Three – Joining Hands in Unity.”

Addressing Fridays’ function, the Hon. Minister for Culture, Youth and Sports, Justina Charles, said that this years’ theme urges us to come together to celebrate our achievements as a nation and to join hands in unity for the greater good of our people and country. She further stated that it is a patriotic call for us to set aside our differences of political colour, religion, class, status and race and to work together for the good of the nation.

September 1st, 2011 marked the commencement of a month long activities, marking Adult Education month. The month of activities which are spearheaded by the Adult Education Division is being held under the theme: “Transcend your Horizons – Learn to Make Life Better.”

While delivering an address on the occasion, Hon. Minister of Social Services, Community Development and Gender Affairs, Gloria Shillingford, called on nationals to embrace the month of activities.

Residents of Silver Lake are expressing their heart-felt gratitude to the government of Dominica, who pledge to construct a housing project in the area. For over thirty-two years, Silver Lake residents have been living in deplorable living conditions since the passage of Hurricane David.

However, Honourable Minister for Housing, Reginald Austrie, announced last week that the Government of Dominica will soon be undertaking the much-needed housing project in the community.

The Governance and Institutional Development Division of the Commonwealth Secretariat in collaboration with the Government of Dominica will host a three day retreat for the members of Cabinet and Permanent Secretaries from Wednesday August 3rd to Friday September 2, 2011 at Fort Young Hotel.

Since 2007, the Commonwealth Secretariat’s Governance and Institutional Development Division has been conducting high level retreats for governments in the Caribbean and African regions to strengthen the effectiveness of cabinet offices in their coordination role and support a more enabling environment for policy making at the centre of government.

Ten Dominican youths to pursue studies in the People’s Republic of China

Ten Dominican youths leave the island this week for the People’s Republic of China.

The students are all recipients of the 2011 scholarship programme and for the next few years will pursue studies in a variety of fields.

Last week, the students attended a ceremony at the Chinese Embassy which was attended by China’s Ambassador to Dominica, Wang Zonglai, His Excellency the President of Dominica, Dr. Nicholas Liverpool, Hon Minister for Education and Human Resource Development Petter Saint Jean and Hon Parliamentary Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office Kelver Darroux.
